NHS

I am an Acute Medicine and Perioperative Medicine Consultant working at North Bristol NHS Trust. In this role, I work in the Acute Medical Unit caring for patients with a wide range of medical conditions, including those who are severely unwell in need of Enhanced Care. I also work within the Perioperative Medicine team providing senior medical input into the care of surgical and trauma patients admitted to the hospital, helping to advise on surgical risk and decision making, preoperative optimisation and management of medical complications after surgery.

I lead on Morbidity and Mortality review for the Acute Medical Team, which gives me the opportunity to identify areas where the team are offering excellent care and where we could improve. I utilise this work to help identify topics which may benefit from Quality Improvement work or improved guidelines, for example, I am currently supporting the development of a guideline on the management of low potassium in hospital.

Currently I am the Clinical Lead for Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), a unit where patients can attend for urgent assessment and investigation for a range of medical conditions and be managed without hospital admission. Under my guidance the service has developed a new pathway for paramedics to directly bring patients to the unit, and the number of patients reviewed per month has increased relieving pressure on the Emergency Department.
